NC leaders threaten to disobey the whip
A number of Nepali Congress (NC) central leaders and MPs have threatened to disobey the party whip if in case the party decides to relent to the Maoist demand for immediate republic declaration and proportional representation system.
At the meeting of the NC parliamentary party, on Sunday, MPs Gobinda Raj Joshi, Khum Bahadur Khadka, Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar and Binaya Dhoj Chand gave the warning.
"The party Mahasamiti has agreed to decide on republic through the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly. If the leadership overturns this decision in the name of political compromise, we will not obey the party whip," Joshi told Kantipur.
He recalled efforts by NC in cooperation with UML to bring a resolution on republic declaration at the recent special session. "We wanted to caution against similar political understanding by overstepping the Mahasamiti decision," he said.
At the meeting, NC MPs urged the party leaders to stick to their stand and fix the election date as soon as possible. nepalnews.com sd Nov 19 07
