Four more universities in the offing

The government is making necessary preparation to open four more universities in the country, a newspaper reported.

To stamp a final seal of approval on this, the Ministry of Education and Sports has sought the counsel of University Grant Commission (UGC) regarding the physical, technical and educational infrastructures, according to Kantipur Daily.

Lava Prasad Tripathi, spokesperson at the Ministry of Education and Sports, told the daily that the commission would submit a report regarding the physical, technical and educational infrastructure needed to open a new university within mid-December and immediately thereafter the government would grant approval for opening new universities.

The ministry is currently busy in internal homework for opening up Sudurpachimanchal (far western) university, Madhyapaschimanchal (mid western) university, Agriculture and Forest Science and an open university. Currently five universities are operational in Nepal: Tribhuvan University, Nepal Sanskrit University, Kathmandu University, Purvanchal University and Pokhara University.

Lumibini Buddhist University in Lumbini has still not come into operation till now even after getting government approval.

“We are in the process of opening a new university in far western and mid western region by merging the Tribhuvan University affiliated campuses currently operating in the region,” said Prof. Dr. Binod Kumar Shrestha, UGC’s member secretary. nepalnews.com ag Nov 19 07
