Parties intensify consultations to break deadlock
As the deadline set by the Maoist draws closer, top leaders of the seven parties have stepped up consultation to find a way out of the current stalemate.
The top leaders have gathered at the Prime Minister’s residence in Balutawar in order to forge consensus on the Maoist demands and the constituent assembly polls.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala held discussion with Maoist chairman Pracahanda, but there was no agreement between them. Senior Maoist leader Dr. Baburam Bhattarai was also present at the meeting.
Koirala also held a separate meeting with UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal.
Deadlock has emerged with the Maoists sticking to their demand for fully proportional representation-based election system even as the Prime Minister has refused to meet that demand.
The political consultations have gained pace as the Maoists have said that they will announce new agitation programme if their demands are not met by Friday. nepalnews.com sd/ia Oct 03 07
