Parties do the unthinkable; November election suspended

Seven parties have decided to suspend the Constituent Assembly (CA) election slated for November 22.

The meeting, on Friday morning, ended after brief consultations that decided to suspend the CA election.

The parties have agreed to announce new date for CA election after further consultations among themselves.

Three parties, UML, People's Front and Nepal Workers and Peasants Party have written down note of dissent on the decision to suspend the November polls.

Likewise, the parties have now decided to call special session of the interim parliament as demanded by the Maoists.

The CA election was suspended after the parties failed to break the deadlock that emerged after Maoists stuck with their demands for changing the election system for the November polls.

Meanwhile, issuing a statement immediately after the government asked the Election Commission (EC) to suspend the entire polls process, the CPN (Maoists) said, “Our party agrees with the postponement of the Constituent Assembly election until the country is not declared a republic and necessary decision for fully proportional representational electoral system is not taken in the special session of the interim parliament to ensure the unity between the six political parties and CPN (Maoists) and keep the peace process right on track.”

The statement signed by party chairman Prachanda added, “But what we would also like to make it clear is that our party sticks by its earlier stand that the CA election should be held on November 22 as scheduled after declaring the country a republic through the interim parliament and deciding in favor of going for a fully proportional representation based electoral system at the earliest.” nepalnews.com sd Oct 05 07
