Maoists register ‘republic motion’ at parliament secretariat
The CPN (Maoist) registered a proposal at the parliament secretariat Wednesday seeking a parliamentary proclamation to turn Nepal a republic and adopt a voting system based on proportional representation.
As the basis for announcement of republic, the ‘special political proposal’ of the Maoists cites such cases as the recent unrest in Kapilvastu, the Sept 2 serial blasts in the capital and the visit recently of King Gyanendra to Kumari Ghar without government’s permission.
The proposal registered as per the Article 159 of the Interim Constitution demands amendment in the constitution to incorporate PR-based system in place of mixed electoral system.
The Maoists also filed an amendment proposal on the Non-governmental Organisation Bill.
The special session of the parliament is set to begin at 4:00 pm Thursday. The special session will directly enter into debate on Maoists’ special political proposal. nepalnews.com mk Oct 10 07
