Special session of the House begins
The special session of the Interim parliament has begun in the parliament building in Singha Durbar Thursday evening.
The special session will discuss the motions introduced by the Maoists for declaration of republic by the Interim parliament and fully proportional system for CA polls. The session was called according to the appeal filed by the Maoists and other fringe communist parties two weeks ago.
Speaking at the inaugural session, chief of the Maoist parliamentary party, Krishna Bahadur Mahara said it was important to eliminate monarchy to hold the constituent assembly elections in free and fair manner.
Mahara further said his party would try to find a consensus on the issues being raised over the next few days.
He further said his party intends to strengthen the unity among the seven party alliance under new political agreements which he said is necessary to lead the country to stability, development and prosperity.
Mahara stressed the need of initiation from the government for merger between the People's Liberation Army and Nepal Army.
Today's session of the parliament would comprise explanation from the Maoists regarding their appeal and statements from the other parties.
Meanwhile, to put pressure on the parties to declare republic through the interim parliament and amend the constitution for full proportional representative election system, Maoist cadres took out mass rally in Kathmandu. The rally began from Maitighar, went through various parts of the city and ended at Ratna Park.
Ethnic groups also organised a sit-in programme at Maitighar demanding announcement of republic and full proportional election system.
Reports say, the Maoist cadres also organised similar rallies and demonstration across the country demanding fulfilment of their demands.
In the meantime, journalists demonstrated in front of the parliament house demanding apology from the Maoist leadership for involvement of their cadres in abducting a journalist in Bara district. nepalnews.com ia Oct 11 07
