NHRC urges govt to improve conditions in prisons

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recommended that the government ‘make necessary arrangements’ for the prisoners staging fast-on-to-death demanding general amnesty for them.

NHRC made this recommendation after making a field visit of several prisons in Morang, Kathmandu, Parsa, Banke and Sindhuli where prisoners are protesting demanding that the government fulfill their demand as per legal provisions.

Issuing a statement after the inspection NHRC said the health condition of the prisoners staging fast-on-to-death is fast worsening.

The commission has also recommended shifting children kept along with other prisoners to child reform centers and treatment for mentally ill prisoners. Saying that the prisons were overcrowded, it also recommended that the government improve facilities inside the jail and allow prisoners to meet their relatives

Reports said prisoners in Banke have warned of mass suicide if their demands are not met. nepalnews.com ag Oct 12 07
