Special envoy of the Indian Prime Minister to Nepal Shyam Saran has said that any decision to be taken by Nepali people will be acceptable to India, but they must be taken through the process of constituent assembly elections.

Speaking to journalists at the end of his three-day visit to Nepal Friday, Saran stressed the need for holding CA polls at the earliest as they are essential for the success of the peace process. India is ready to help Nepal in all aspects of the process, he said.

India, according to him, gives high importance to peace process and elections in Nepal. Stating that free and fair elections are very important for the success of the peace process, Saran said the elections must pave way for democratic, stable and prosperous Nepal. He further said early polls soon could benefit Nepal more.

Saran, who revealed that he was not an invitee of the Nepal government, expressed hope from his consultations with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, Maoist chairman Prachanda, Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, Rastriya Janashakti Party chairman Surya Bahadur Thapa, Rastriya Prajatantra Party chairman Pashupati Shumsher Rana and other leaders that the peace process would not fail in Nepal.

In response to the media queries about the Terai issue, Saran said three weeks long movement in the past was the result of marginalisation of Terai community but he termed the armed outfits, without naming any group, operating in Terai districts as criminal groups who want to take advantage of the fluid political situation of the country.

He said governments of India and Nepal were in regular consultation on the issue and controlling the criminal activities across the border.

Saran is scheduled to return to New Delhi today completing his three-day long stay in Nepal. nepalnews.com ia Oct 12 07
