UML to table ‘different proposal’ at special House session
A senior leader of the UML has said the party is going to table a proposal at the ongoing special session of the parliament, hoping to bring the parties to a consensus.
The UML proposal's is about declaring republic through a parliamentary proclamation and ratifying the proclamation by an elected constituent assembly, UML standing committee member Jhal Nath Khanal said today.
"The UML has been working to forge political consensus and is preparing to table that proposal at the House," Khanal said speaking at the Reporters Club. According to him, implementing republic immediately after a House proclamation would not, however, be a democratic move.
Commenting on the second demand of the Maoists - fully proportional voting system - the UML leader suggested that the current dispute could be settled by adopting "75 percent proportional system" instead of mixed system.
Speaking at the same programme, Maoist leader Dev Gurung said his party was ready to go for an option like that.
Saying that all his party wants to do is to ensure republic, Gurung said the 'special political proposal' filed at the House would not be withdrawn unless there is a political consensus. nepalnews.com mk Oct 12 07
