NRN’s discuss enhancing cooperation with the business community

The second day of the 3rd Global NRN (Non-resident Nepali) Conference that kicked off in Kathmandu yesterday is discussing, among others, on enhancing cooperation between NRN’s and the Nepalese business community.

The NRN participants are also bracing to elect a new leadership for the Non Resident Nepali Association (NRNA).

Four NRN’s had filed their candidacy for the post of the president of NRNA after Dr Upendra Mahato, the current president, said he will not run for a third term. Those vying for the coveted post are Bhim Udas, Ram Thapa, Dev Man Hirachan and Dr Shyam Karki.

Discussions had started from yesterday to find an agreement between the four so that a new president of NRNA could be elected unanimously.

Similarly, NRN’s and Nepalese industrialists are also engaged in discussions to increase cooperation.

Second vice-president of Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI) Kush Kumar Joshi said that he is of the firm belief the ongoing discussions and deliberations between the two would derive the expected result.

He also said that the business community is ready to enhance cooperation with NRN’s to bring in the technical expertise and skills of the NRN’s including their investments for the benefit of the country.

Additionally, the NRN's are also discussing the changes needed in the NRN act as they have said some of its regulations are incomplete.

Addressing the conference yesterday, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had assured of his support to the issues raised by NRNs and also urged the NRN community to increase investment in Nepal in coordination with the local business community. PM Koirala had also said he was supportive of the NRNs’ demand for dual citizenship.

Some 500 NRN representatives from over 40 countries are participating in the conference, which will formulate new NRN policies and elect a new leadership of the Non-resident Nepali Association (NRNA). nepalnews.com ag Oct 16 07
