NHRC reminds govt to protect the right to food of people
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said lack of government plans and policies for food sovereignty and their implementation has forced many to remain hungry despite the international legal instruments guaranteeing right to eat to all people.
In a statement on Tuesday, as the world celebrates Food Day, NHRC said the State must guarantee citizens' right to access to food even during famine or in critical time.
NHRC has reminded the government that the interim constitution of the country, International Protocol on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights have established the right to food as a fundamental right of every people. It said government agencies have not been able to give enough concentration on protecting these rights of the people.
World Food Day is observed every year on October 16, to mark the day of the establishment of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) founded in 1945. nepalnews.com ia Oct 16 07
