NRNs have expressed the need of a partnership approach with the government and private sector in infrastructure development of the country.

On the second day of the 3rd Global NRN (Non-Resident Nepali) Conference being held in Kathmandu, the NRN’s said they are willing to play a meaningful role in socio-economic development of the country.

Vice-president NRNA-North America, Sharda Jung Thapa said the NRNs are ready to explore and exploit the opportunities provided there is a sustained effort from the government and consistency in its policies.

He stressed the need of pulling NRN talents across the globe and utilising their expertise and capital for social infrastructure development in the areas of education, health care and community development. “Political stability and consistency in policies are two vital factors that have an empirical relationship with investment,” Thapa said.

Thapa also expressed that the government would have to come up with a concrete plan of action to utilise the vast talents of NRNs.

The NRN’s, along with the private sector have vowed to play a supportive role in the government’s endeavours to this regard.

At the plenary held on investment opportunities in infrastructure today, minister of state for water resources Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, while expressing the government’s concern on issues raised by NRNs and other potential investors in regard to investment in hydropower, assured that economic agendas and development would be on top priority of the government once the political agendas are settled.

Diwakar Golchha, first vice-president FNCCI, stressed that participation of NRNs in building a ‘New Nepal’ was essential. He informed that FNCCI, as an apex body of Nepali private sector, has been consistently raising voices and working sincerely in making Nepal a lucrative destination for foreign investment.

Pruna Prasad Kadaria, secretary at the ministry of physical planning and works, made a presentation on investment opportunities in various infrastructure projects in water supply and sanitation, urban development and roads.

Meanwhile, NRN coordinator of South Korea, LG Sherpa, informed that NRN Korea chapter is organising an international workshop on hydropower investment potentials in Nepal next year in Seoul. nepalnews.com dr Oct 16 07
