Journos stage protests against Shah’s abduction

Birendra Shah

Journalists in different parts of the country organised demonstrations on Wednesday demanding immediate release of Birendra Shah, a central member of Press Chautari Nepal, who was abducted from Bara on October 5.

In Chitwan, journalists blocked vehicular traffic for half-an-hour in the district headquarters Bharatpur in the morning to protest the abduction. They displayed banners and placards with slogans demanding safe release of journalist Shah and asking the government authorities to intensify search for him.

In Lahan of Siraha district, local journalists staged demonstration against Shah’s abduction.

Similar protest programmes were organised in several other districts.

Police and teams of journalists have not been able to get any clue about his whereabouts despite their continuous effort.

Search missions deployed by the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) and Press Chautari Nepal have said local Maoist leaders are involved in the abduction, but the party has not taken any initiative for his release.

The Maoist party has said it has no policy of taking journalists under control and has ‘warned’ of action against party cadres if found involved in Shah's abduction.

Shah was the Bara correspondent of the Kathmandu-based Nepal F.M and Avenues Television. nepalnews.com mk Oct 17 07
