Vijaya Dashami celebrated
The tenth and the main day of Dashain festival, Vijaya Dashami, was celebrated throughout the country and outside on Sunday.
People received tika, Jamara and blessings from elders amidst family gatherings and engaged in merrymaking on the day. In Nepal, Vijaya Dashami is celebrated not only by Hindus, but also by many other religious communities as a way of social interaction.
The Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti, a committee of leading astrologers who give out auspicious timings based on Nepali calendar on religious and cultural occasions, had declared 10:47 am (NST) as the most auspicious time for receiving tika.
Generally, people receive tika from their parents and elders at the most auspicious time and visit their relatives throughout the day. But those who cannot visit all of their relatives on the day can do so within five days till Purnima.
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has wished happiness, peace and prosperity to all Nepalis on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami.
Similarly, King Gyanendra has in a message also extended best wishes for Dashain to all Nepalis, both at home and abroad, wishing them happiness, peace and prosperity.
As this festival is known for family gatherings, people return from all parts of the world, as well as different parts of the country, to celebrate Dashain. Apart from the religious practices, Dashain is also marked by merrymaking, gambling and excessive consumption of food and liquor.
Nepalis living abroad also celebrate the festival passionately as it provides them a rare opportunity to gather at one place and exchange greetings. nepalnews.com ag Oct 21 07
