Govt to communicate with UN to extend UNMIN term
The government is preparing to correspond with the United Nations soon to extend the tenure of United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), which is ending in coming January.
According to Nepal Samacharpatra daily, the government is preparing to correspond at a time when there is debate on the nature of UNMIN's role when the CA election slated for November 22 has been suspended.
The daily quotes PM's foreign affairs advisor Dr. Suresh Chalise as saying that the cabinet would soon decide to communicate with the UN.
Meanwhile, UNMIN chief Ian Martin is currently in New York to brief the Security Council – possibly on Thursday – about the latest Nepal situation.
UNMIN had been established with one year tenure by the Security Council to help in the arms management and election in Nepal.
Before he left for New York, Martin had met with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and Maoist chairman Prachanda to seek information on whether they would ask for extending UNMIN's tenure after it expires in January. Sources said that both Koirala and Prachanda expressed willingness to extend its tenure since its task is not yet complete. nepalnews.com sd Oct 24 07
