Nepal presents draft resolution for UN regional centre in Kathmandu

Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations Madhu Raman Acharya on Wednesday introduced Nepal's draft resolution on the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific for consideration by the First Committee of the 62nd General Assembly.

Addressing the committee, he underscored the importance of regional initiatives to achieve the goals of disarmament, peace and security, further adding that such a process could be a building block to comprehensive disarmament, which otherwise was moving in a rather slow pace in recent years, a statement by the permanent mission said.

He informed the committee that Nepal and the United Nations Secretariat had signed the host country agreement and the MOU with regard to the physical relocation of the centre to Kathmandu, and also expressed optimism that the centre would soon be able to start its operations from Nepal.

Similarly, foreign secretary Gyan Chandra Acharya addressing the High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development at the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday said that the least developed countries (LDCs) are still in the classical stage of underdevelopment where they seriously lack capital formation and technological advancement resulting in the vicious trap of a low level of equilibrium, low level of productivity, and paucity of physical and technological infrastructure.

He mentioned that a large majority of the LDCs continue to find themselves at the bottom of the development ladder, despite revolutionary changes in science and technology and unprecedented level of globalization.

He urged the donor community to enhance high and sustained level of external financing in order to swiftly tackle poverty and underdevelopment. nepalnews.com ia Oct 25 07
