Hundreds of students joined in the protest in front of NOC head office at Babarmahal, Kathmandu. The protesting students also submitted a memo to NOC managing director Digambar Jha, demanding that the NOC review the decision to hike the prices of petroleum products and check leakages and 'corruption' in the supply mechanism.

The students had submitted a memo to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on Saturday, protesting the government's decision to allow the NOC to hike fuel prices. The eight student organisations had jointly staged street protests immediately after the announcement of price hike on Wednesday.

Citing its mounting losses, the NOC has hiked the prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene and LP gas. Price of per litre of petrol has been increased by 6 rupees, diesel by 2 rupees, kerosene 3 rupees and cooking gas by 200 rupees per cylinder.

On the other hand, the NOC has ruled out the possibility of reducing the price of petroleum products. NOC managing director Jha told reporters on Saturday that the corporation would soon turn bankrupt if it were to continue selling petroleum products at the price lower than its costs. nepalnews.com mk Oct 28 07
