Parliament special session adjourned till Tuesday
The special session of the interim legislature parliament, which resumed Monday afternoon after two weeks recess, has been adjourned till 8:00 am Tuesday.
Speaker Subash Nemwang declared adjourned the session following a brief debate on the ‘special political proposal’ tabled by the Maoists, which seeks to turn Nepal into a republic through a parliamentary proclamation and adopt fully proportional election system.
Two fringe communist parties Nepal Workers and Peasants Party and National People’s Front tabled separate amendment proposals on the Maoist proposal.
The special session, which was to resume at 11:00 am was delayed by nearly three hours as Speaker Nemwang remained busy in consultations with political leaders in his attempt to facilitate a consensus on the Maoist demands.
Nemwang held separate meetings with Maoist chairman Prachanda, UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, chief whips of various parties as well as some legal experts.
With parties failing to break the deadlock over the Maoist proposal, the issue is likely to be put for voting in the special session.
However, leaders have said they will continue with the political consultations until the very last minute to reach a compromise. nepalnews.com mk Oct 29 07
