Tuesday’s mass meeting will declare revolt if demands not met: Bhattarai
Maoist second-in-command Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has renewed his party’s warning to declare nationwide protest movement from a mass meeting scheduled to take place on Tuesday in the capital if the 22-point demands are not met by then.
Speaking at a programme organised by the Federal Democratic Republican Front, Japan in Kathmandu on Sunday, Bhattarai said his party had almost given up hope for fulfillment of the demands. He added that the Tuesday's mass meeting would formally declare protest programmes.
He also claimed that the Maoists were preparing to walk out of the government for a meaningful change in the country.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the Carter Center led by former US diplomat Peter Burleigh and Danish Ambassador to Nepal Fin Thilsted separately met Bhattarai at his Nayabazaar residence today.
According to Bhattarai’s aide Bishwodeep Pandey, the discussions focused on the current political developments in Nepal, the 22 demands raised by CPN-M, constituent assembly elections and the planned Maoist agitations.
The Maoist leader told both the delegations that his party was in favour of negotiated settlement of the problems, adding that the street agitations would be launched only if the demands are not met through dialogue. nepalnews.com mk Sep 16 07
