Death toll in Kapilvastu climbs to 28

As normalcy returns in Kapilvastu with security personnel deployed to assess the losses, more dead bodies have been recovered from the incident areas, pushing the death toll to 28.

The police recovered 12 dead bodies on Wednesday from near a rivulet in Bisampur VDC of Kapilbastu district. Similarly, 11 bodies have been recovered from the same area on Thursday morning.

The dead bodies have not been identified as they have been burnt. Villagers say many more people are missing and the police have intensified the search.

To ease the search operation, local administration has relaxed curfew in some parts of the Kapilvastu district for today, except in Chandrauta and the east-west highway.

Local administration said more than 300 people have been injured during the incident.

Reports say that in last few days, around 300 homes and 100 vehicles have been set to fire by mobs in the district. Police fear that some more people could have died in those fires.

Following the killing of one Mohit Khan, leader of Democratic Madhesi Front and a former leader of anti-Maoist resistance group, on Sunday (September 16) morning in Birpur area, violence had erupted in Kapilbastu and Rupandehi districts. nepalnews.com is Sep 20 07
