NC Mahasamiti to decide on republic; Kishunji writes to Koirala and Deuba
Nepali Congress (NC) Mahasamiti meeting is taking place on Sunday and Monday at party headquarters in Sanepa with the major objective of deciding on party's formal policy towards republic for the coming election.
Leaders have said that the Mahasamiti meeting – which is taking place after ten years – will take a historic decision to adopt federal democratic republic as party's policy marking a departure from its six-decades-old policy of favouring constitutional monarchy.
Prime Minister and president of NC Girija Prasad Koirala will inaugurate the Mahasamiti meeting, which will be participated by 628 representatives.
The central working committee (CWC) of NC is meeting on Sunday morning to set the agenda for the Mahasamiti. The Mahasamiti is the second most powerful party policy-making body after General Convention.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and former prime minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai has written letters to NC president Koirala and NC-Democratic president Sher Bahadur Deuba reminding them about the need for the Congress to join hands with nationalist forces.
Although the contents of his letters have not been made public yet, reports say that it stresses on the need for the NC to stick to its centrist policies. It has also stressed on unity of two Congress parties. nepalnews.com sd Sep 23 07
