Koirala says NC is all for democratic republic
Prime Minister and president of Nepali Congress Girija Prasad Koirala has said his party is all set to formally adopt the policy of democratic republic.
Speaking at the central committee meeting at Baluwatar Sunday morning, Koirala said the NC should concentrate on tackling the difficulties that may arise during its transition to a new political ideology.
He said there is no alternative to republic and stressed that constituent assembly elections must be held on time with the participation of the Maoists.
Koirala also urged those NC leaders, who are opposing the idea of republic, to pay attention to the demands of the people.
The meeting organised ahead of the Mahasamiti meeting also discussed the report presented by party general secretary Ram Chandra Poudel proposing establishment of federal democratic republic in Nepal.
Meanwhile, some leaders of the Nepali Congress (Democratic) met with Koirala and urged him to immediately finalise the party unification.
The Mahasamiti meeting, which is to begin today afternoon in Kathmandu, is expected to adopt federal democratic republic as the political agenda of the party. nepalnews.com ia Sep 23 07
