Nepal lacks resources to tackle climate change: Pradhan
Foreign Minister Sahana Pradhan has said Nepal lacks adequate resources and technology to enhance its capacity to address both the mitigation and adaptation aspects of climate change.
Addressing the opening of the plenary meeting of the High-Level Event on Climate Change convened by the United Nations Secretary General on Monday, Minister Pradhan said climate change is a threat to achieving sustainable development and meeting the targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
She added that the LDCs like Nepal, which are least responsible for climate change are experiencing the worse impacts of climate change in terms of fast receding Himalayan glaciers, a statement by Nepal mission at the UN reads.
She stressed on the need to fulfill the commitments of emission reduction targets of the Kyoto Protocol with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities as well as the need for demonstration of leadership by the developed world.
On the sidelines of the event, Pradhan held bilateral meeting with the Foreign Minister of Australia Alexander Downer. Pradhan briefed her counterpart on the ongoing peace process in Nepal and the constituent assembly election and urged Australia for an enhanced level of assistance in the post-conflict situation. nepalnews.com ia Sep 25 07
