Diplomatic ties with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines established

Foreign Minister Sahana Pradhan

Nepal and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines have established diplomatic relations on September 27 when Minister for Foreign Affairs Sahana Pradhan and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Louis H. Straker signed a joint communiqué to this effect amid a function held at the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in New York.

With the establishment of diplomatic relations, both countries aim at promoting and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the political, commercial and cultural fields. With Saint Vincent and Grenadines, the number of countries with which Nepal has diplomatic relations has reached 127.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is an island nation, situated between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, north of Trinidad and Tobago with an area of 389 sq. km and a population of 117, 534.

Similarly, on the sidelines of the sixty-second session of the United Nations General Assembly, Minister Pradhan attended the thirty-first Annual Ministerial Meeting of the Group of 77 and China on the same day.

Addressing the meeting, Minister Pradhan stated that the Group has special responsibility to safeguard the interests of the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island states.

She laid particular emphasis on the need for the Group to play an active role in promoting the cause of these groups of countries and strengthening South-South co-operation, concluding the development round of trade negotiations in the interest of developing countries, and operationalising Aid-for-Trade initiative.

She reaffirmed Nepal's full commitment to the spirit and principles of the Group of 77.

Minister Pradhan also held talks with the UK's Secretary of State for International Development Douglas Alexander and discussed the current status of peace process and recent political development, status of development cooperation between Nepal and UK. nepalnews.com ia Sep 28 07
