Police arrest Rajendra Mahato, three dozen others; all released now
Police arrested Minister for Industries, Commerce and Supplies on Saturday from a demonstration organised by his party in front of the Election Commission.
Mahato's party, which split recently from Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Anandi Devi), demonstrated against the decision of the commission to recognise Anandi Devi Singh-led faction as the official NSP.
Some three dozen leaders of Mahato's party including vice chairman Laxman Lal Karna, central leaders leaders Sarita Giri and Anil Kumar Jha were also arrested from the demonstration. They were taken under control when they tried to burn the effigies of the Prime Minister and the copy of the EC's decision.
All of them were released after three hours.
The EC had asked the Mahato faction to register a new party by Saturday 4 p.m. However, the faction rejected the decision and threatened to begin agitations to disrupt the polls. Considering the busy schedule of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala for Saturday, Mahato said he would submit his resignation to PM on Sunday. nepalnews.com ia Sep 29 07
