PM approves Mahato’s resignation; NSP faction to move SC against EC decision

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has approved the resignation of Minister for Industries, Commerce and Supplies, Rajendra Mahato.

According to the Office of the Council of Ministers, PM Koirala has, after approving the resignation, given Mahato’s portfolio to Home Minister Krishna Prasad Situala.

Mahato had submitted his resignation to Koirala on Saturday, opposing the Election Commission’s decision authenticating the Anandi Devi Singh-led Nepal Sadbhawana Party (NSP).

Meanwhile, the NSP establishment has stripped 17 leaders including Mahato, who now leads the rival faction that goes by the same name (NSP-Anandi Devi), Laxman Lal Karna, Anil Kumar Jha, Sarita Giri and Devendra Giri, of general membership of the party.

In the meantime, the Mahato-led NSP has decided to move the Supreme Court against the Election Commission’s decision. A meeting of the national working committee of the party today took the decision.

The meeting also decided to launch agitations for “economic and political rights” of Terai people.

Describing the EC’s decision as a conspiracy, Mahato turned down the deadline to register his party with the EC, for contesting the constituent assembly elections, by Saturday.

Mahato and his three dozen supporters were taken into custody for nearly three hours yesterday when they were staging protest in front of the EC. nepalnews.com mk Sep 30 07
