Chinese envoy meets PM amid concerns over possible obstruction in Olympic
torch relay
Chinese ambassador Zheng Xianglin met Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala
and reiterated his government's concern over the possible obstruction by
Tibetan exiles in the Olympic torch relay to Mt Everest.
During the meeting at the Prime Minister's residence in Baluawatar, the
Chinese envoy lauded the Nepal government's decision to deploy additional
security forces to thwart possible protests during Olympic torch run.
At least 25 army and police personnel have already reached Camp II with
logistics and mountaineering equipment to prevent any activities against
China, according to the Home Ministry.
Chinese climbers plan to take the Olympic flame to the top of Mt Everest,
the world's highest peak, as part of the global relay leading up to the
August 8 opening of the Summer Olympics in Beijing.
In today's meeting, Xianglin also congratulated Koirala on the success of
the constituent assembly election and assured that the Chinese government
would continue its support to the future government in Nepal.
Meanwhile, German ambassador to Nepal Franz Erwin Ring also met PM Koirala
today and discussed the post-election scenario. Franz, too, congratulated
the Nepal government for the success of the CA polls and assured of
continuation of development assistance to Nepal. nepalnews.com mk Apr 21
