India's opposition MP fears rise of Naxal menace after Maoist victory in Nepal
A member of parliament of India belonging to opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has warned the Indian government that Maoists' victory in Nepal polls could lead to the growth of the Naxal menace in the country, causing serious internal security problems, reports PTI.
During a debate in the Indian parliament, Lok Sabha, Monday, Yogi Adityanath, BJP MP from Gorakhpur, spoke of the growing "red danger" in India following the former rebels' win in the Constituent Assembly election and the likely abolition of monarchy in Nepal.
"If Indian government could declare Indian Maoists and Naxalites as terrorists, why Maoists in Nepal are not declared a terrorist outfit?", he wondered, adding that Naxals had spread their network dramatically during the past four years.
From some six to seven states covering 56 districts, naxalites have now extended their sway to half of the country by expanding to 175 districts, he said.
The BJP MP said the Central government, which was favouring Maoists in Nepal, should not forget that they are aiming for "'Maoist Land', which included large parts of India".
Adityanath said that while the Government hailed the outcome of elections in Nepal, it was also a "celebration time" for the Naxalites in the country who have stepped up their operations.
'The home minister (Shivraj Patil) agreed in parliament that the Naxal (Maoist) problem has increased. But when the Maoists won the elections in Nepal, the Indian government welcomed it. If this is supported, then we cannot solve the problem here,' he said.
'When the Maoists started gaining strength in Nepal, Indian Maoists also got emboldened and carried out many terror operations in India,' Adityanath said. nepalnews.com sd Apr 22 08
