80 pc contestants failed to get 10 pc votes: EC

Some 80 percent of the candidates who contested the constituent assembly
elections under first-past-the-post system have lost their deposit at the Election Commission (EC) since they could not garner 10 percent of the votes cast in their constituency.

In a statement on Tuesday, the EC said 3,157 contestants out of 3,946 lost their deposits. Those who secured at least 10 percent votes will have to claim at the commission for return of their deposit within 90 day from the day of result announcement.

The EC further said in total, five percent votes were declared invalid. There was 61 percent turnout in the polls - highest in Dolpa with 80 percent turnout and least in Manang with 40 percent turnout.

The commission said vote counting of both FPTP and PR have been completed in 230 constituencies. nepalnews.com ia Apr 22 08
