UML central committee approves gen secy’s resignation
The 18th meeting of the CPN (UML) Central Committee which started at the party headquarters in Balkhu Sunday has approved party general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal’s resignation.
The CC meeting approved Nepal’s resignation after vigorous debate on the resignation episode and the possible changes in the party leadership.
He had announced his resignation few days earlier, taking responsibility for the electoral loss faced by the party. Nepal, who held the top post in the party for nearly 14 years, had faced humiliating defeat at the hands of low-key Maoist candidates in Kathmandu-2 and Rautahat-6.
The CC meeting, which is expected to run for several days, will discussing the party's defeat in the CA election and evaluate party's weaknesses, UML leaders said.
Acting general secretary Amrit Kumar Bohara presented a 10-page political report at the meeting today.
The meeting assumes crucial significance as it comes amid preparations to form next government. Apart from discussing the holding of the party's eighth general convention, the meeting will also decide whether UML should be a part of next government or not, leaders said.
The agenda of the CC meeting had been finalised by the UML standing committee meeting held on Saturday. nepalnews.com sd/mk Apr 27 08
