Police arrest hundreds from Tibetans' protest
Nearly 400 'pro-independence' Tibetans were arrested during their protest
rally in Kathmandu on Friday, ahead of the grand opening of the Olympic
Games in Chinese capital Beijing.
Police arrested the Tibetans as soon as they started demonstration in
front of the Chinese Embassy's visa office at Hattisar.
It was a routine protest with hundred or so Tibetans chanting slogans
against the Chinese government's suppression against pro-independence
activists in Tibet, and getting arrested within minutes by the police.
The arrested Tibetans have been kept at the Nepal Police Club and few
other police stations and are likely to be released by the evening.
The Tibetan exiles have been carrying out protests in Kathmandu for months
now. While national and international human rights groups have raised
concerns over the treatment of the police towards Tibetan protesters the
Nepal government has repeatedly said it would not allow any anti-China
activities in Nepali soil. nepalnews.com mk Aug 08 08
