Police open fire at protesters in Bara, strike cripples life in Terai

Situation in Jitpur of Bara district remains tense from early Saturday as demonstrations continue around the town.

The demonstrators set fire to police post in Jitpur this morning. After the incident, the police fired around 30 rounds of shots in the air and then fired rubber bullets and used several rounds of teargas shells to disperse the protesting crowd.

Reports say, over a dozen demonstrators have been injured, two of them critically. The injured persons have been taken to a nearby health post for treatment. The police opened fire after the protesters continued demonstrating despite repeated requests.

Cadres of the United Madhesi Democratic Front have been demonstrating demanding that their 6-point demands be fulfilled before the constituent assembly elections.

More police personnel have been dispatched from the district headquarters to take the situation under control in Jitpur.

In the meantime, some unidentified people shot and killed a youth in the district last night. The victim who has not been identified received two bullets in his chest.

The indefinite general strike called by the front has affected normal life across Terai region on the fourth day today. The hilly districts in eastern region also remain closed due to the strike called by a Limbuwan group. nepalnews.com ia Feb 16 08
