Govt could request EC to postpone deadline for submitting candidate list
As the United Madhesi Democratic Front (UMDF) has indicated that it would not back down from agitation in Madhes before its demands are fulfilled, the government is going to request the Election Commission (EC) to postpone by five days the deadline for submitting the closed-list of candidates to be elected under proportional representation system, reports Nepal Samacharpatra.
The current poll schedule of EC states that the deadline for submitting the closed-list of candidates is February 20.
The meeting of the cabinet, on Tuesday, could request the EC to postpone the deadline for the same till February 25.
The government expects that the postponement will provide it with a window of opportunity to placate the agitating Madhesi parties and ensure their participation in April election.
On Monday, the Home Ministry had issued a statement expressing the readiness of the government to hold talks with the agitating Madhesi parties and to fulfill the 22-point pact signed with Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF). nepalnews.com sd Feb 19 08
