Violence in Terai putting peace at peril: EU
The local EU heads of mission called on Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala at the latter’s official residence in Baluwatar on Thursday for an exchange of views about the current political situation in Nepal
During the meeting, the EU heads of missions comprising the French ambassador to Nepal, who recently got the local presidency of the EU, including Danish ambassador and the UK charge d’affaires put major emphasis on the necessity to hold the Constituent Assembly polls according to the schedule fixed by the Nepal Election Commission.
They passed on the message that elections are indeed critical for the ongoing peace process for the success of which their respective countries have extended support and assistance.
The EU heads of missions also forwarded their deep concern about the situation in the Madesh.
“The violence and the unsatisfied political demands [in Terai] are risking the achievements Nepal has made towards peace,” the EU heads of mission said in a joint statement issued after the meeting, urging the government including the political parties to work quickly “to secure an agreement that allows representative elections to go forward.”
The European Union Local Presidency also stressed that it is crucial that the government continues to work towards inclusive, credible, free and fair elections on 10 April. nepalnews.com ag Feb 22 08
