Terai sees some respite on 10th day of general strike
As talks between the leaders of Madhesi parties and the ruling seven-party alliance head closer to a consensus, life in some Terai districts is slowly limping back to normal on the 10th day of the general strike.
However, curfew orders are on stay today as well in the eastern town of Biratnagar and Nepalgunj in the mid-west.
The curfew in Nepalgunj was re-imposed from 10 this morning as agitators resumed demonstrations when the curfew was lifted for a few hours early morning. The curfew in Biratnagar continues since Thursday afternoon.
There were a few violent incidents in some places today. The agitators burnt down three fuel tankers in Bara and vandablised another in Parsa. One microbus was burnt down in Nijgadh, Bara.
In the east, the situation has eased after the agitating ethnic groups responded positively to the invitation of the government’s talk team to settle their demands through talks.
The United Democratic Madhesi Front has imposed general strike in Terai districts and the eastern districts have seen similar strike called by Federal National Republic Front since past 10 days. nepalnews.com ia Feb 22 08
