Cracks in the Madhesi alliance
Signs of serious differences have appeared in United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) with one of its major constituent reportedly dissatisfied with the way the talks are going on with the government.
This is said to be the main reason why yesterday night’s marathon talks between the government and UDMF - an alliance of Mahanta Thakur-led Terai Madesh Loktantric Party (TMLP), Rajendra Mahato-led Sadbhawana Party (SP) and Upendra Yadav’s Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) - that went till 4 am Monday morning at the Prime Minister’s residence was scuttled even after two sides reached an understanding in most of the issues, according to sources
It is learnt that although TMLP and SP had agreed in principle to sign on a draft which stated that the key demand of UDMF- One Madhes state – would be decided through the Constituent Assembly, Upendra Yadav who was representing MJF in the talks had expressed his serious objection to it and left the talks in the middle, squashing all hopes of a deal with the government.
Later the talks was further jeopardised when the UDMF’s proposal that the CA election be postponed by a month so that they be able to participate in it was flatly rejected by the Seven party leaders. nepalnews.com ag Feb 25 08
