NHRC says human rights situation has worsened in Terai

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed concerned over the unimproved human rights situation in the Terai.

Issuing a statement on Thursday, the national human rights watchdog said the continued strike and demonstrations in Terai have deteriorated the human rights situation.

The NHRC said strike has badly affected the school environment and caused negative impact on children preparing for their School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examinations. The bomb attacks on schools and houses of political leaders and election officials are inhuman, NHRC said.

It asked the agitating groups to make their demonstrations peaceful and allow children to enjoy their right to education by not forcing the schools to close.

The strike has been withdrawn from later evening Thursday after the government and the United Democratic Madhesi Front signed an eight-point deal to address the demands raised by agitating groups. nepalnews.com ia Feb 29 08
