VDC secretaries halt works again
VDC secretaries across the country stopped their work for a day as part of their phase-wise protest programme on Sunday.
According to Bhawani Prasad Ghimire, chairman of VDC Secretaries Rights Protection Centre, the secretariat will halt their works every Sunday and Monday from now on.
He said the secretaries had no choice other than continuing with the strike as the government failed to meet their demands which include which include security in workplaces and life insurance worth Rs 1 million.
The secretaries had been carrying out strike every Sunday for five weeks now, protesting the government’s failure to implement the 9-point agreement it had signed with them in July.
On December 2, the Centre had announced weekly strike for one month and had also warned of an 8-day strike from January 6.
The Centre, which accuses the government of being insensitive towards providing security to VDC secretaries in the face of growing attacks and threats from armed Terai groups and criminal gangs, has also threatened to indefinitely close down the local bodies if the demands are not met even after these protests programmes. nepalnews.com mk/ag Jan 06 08
