MPs turned away from border

A group of Nepali lawmakers who had gone to inspect the Laxmanpur barrage were turned away by Indian security personnel.

In the wake of disputes on border encroachment in Susta and rallies by student affiliated with Maoists in border areas, the Indian Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) prevented the group of Nepali lawmakers from entering into Indian side to inspect the barrage – which is blamed for causing inundation in Nepali territory during monsoon.

The SSB turned them back saying they had not received any prior information regarding their visit.

A member of the lawmakers' delegation Prakash Jwala, however, said that there was no need for them to provide prior information.

"We were not undertaking any official tour. We just wanted to visit the area," he told BBC Nepali Service.
