NC remained indifferent to Madhesis: Thakur
Former leader of the Nepali Congress, Mahantha Thakur, who recently formed the Terai Madhesh Loktantrik Party, has stated that Nepali Congress never made efforts to address the problems faced by the Madhes residents.
He said the uprising in Terai was the result of centuries of indifferences to the grievances of the Madhesi people and suppression by the centralised government.
Speaking at the Sajha Sawal programme organized by the BBC Nepali Service and BBC World Trust Service in Itahari Tuesday, Thakur said had some demands of the Terai been fulfilled by the state earlier, it would not have faced the Terai uprising last year.
He further said having felt that NC would never meet the sentiments and demands of the Terai people, the new party was established.
Criticised for leaving a national party (NC) to establish a regional one and the Election Commission clarifying that law does not have provisions to register regional parties, Thakur said the new party is not a regional rather a national one.
Thakur also informed that his party is making efforts for dialogue with the armed groups in Terai so that a conducive environment for the constituent assembly polls would be created.
Despite his defection from the NC and the parliament alleging both for not taking the Terai issue seriously, Thakur had already said his party will take part in the upcoming elections. nepalnews.com ia Jan 08 08
