Election system dispute rattles student unions
Just like the issue of election system had unsettled their parent parties for months, the student unions are engaged in dispute over what kind of system be employed in the forthcoming student union election.
While the unions affiliated with Nepali Congress (NC) – the Nepal Students Union (NSU) – and Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) – the All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU) – have supported holding election in the existing system, the one affiliated with Maoists – the ANNFSU-Revolutionary – has demanded full proportional representation-based election system.
The meeting among the student unions held on Wednesday failed to arrive at any understanding.
The student election, which takes place every two years, is set to be held one and a half months later this year.
Earlier, their parent parties had also engaged in similar dispute before they finally settled to increase proportional component in the existing mixed election system. nepalnews.com sd Jan 10 08
