Minister Nepal wants Rs 40 billion budget in education
Pradeep Nepal, Minister for Education and Sports, has said that the government can spend enough resources in education sector if there is budget of Rs 35-40 billion allocated annually.
Speaking at the Ninth National Convention of Private and Boarding Schools Organization of Nepal (PABSON), Thursday, Minister Nepal expressed displeasure at what he called as paltry allocation in the sector. "Even in worst cases, around 20 percent of GDP is allocated for education whereas here we only get around 16 percent in Nepal," he said.
In this year's budget, the government had allocated Rs 27 billion for education.
Minister Nepal also assured private school operators that an act to govern them properly was being drafted.
Earlier, PABSON president Umesh Shrestha had called for separate umbrella act to govern private education sector. He said there were 8500 private schools where 1.5 million students were getting quality education. "We employ 1.5 lakh of teachers and employees. There is around Rs 9 billion of investment in this sector," Shrestha said. nepalnews.com sd Jan 10 08
