UNSC to decide on UNMIN tenure extension this week

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will make a decision regarding the extension of UNMIN's tenure before its current tenure ends on January 22.

The government of Nepal has already requested the UN to extend the tenure of the UNMIN by a further six months.

Addressing a press meet, Monday, Special Representative of the Security General Ian Martin said he will leave for New York on Monday to brief the UNSC on the progress being made in the implementation of the 23-point agreement, as the political basis for sustaining the peace process and for continuing unity among the seven party alliance.

Martin said that the UNSC will inquire about the security situation leading up to the April 10 election, and the progress in dialogue with Madhesi, Janajati and other traditionally marginalised groups. "I will not be able to answer these questions with certainty, because they do not depend on UNMIN, they depend on Nepali political and community leaders," he said.

Martin also said he was pleased that the cabinet is reactivating the special committee to move ahead the process of integration of the verified combatants of the Maoist army.

He assured that UN will wncourage the dispatch of as many international election observers as possible for the coming CA election.

Martin hoped that the political parties will expand cooperation up to local level and embrace other political parties and civil society. "Every registered party must be able to campaign without impediment, and every voter must feel free of intimidation," he said. nepalnews.com sd Jan 14 08
