OHCHR-Nepal hands over human rights pocketbook to Nepal Police
OHCHR- Nepal Representative Richard Bennett on Thursday handed over 58,000 copies of a pocketbook on human rights to Nepal Police.
According to OHCHR-Nepal, the Human Rights Standing Order for Nepal Police (Nepal Prahari Manab Adhikar Sthai Adesh) consists of international human rights standards for law enforcement officials on issues including: policing in a democracy, conducting investigations in accordance with human rights, crowd control, use of force and firearms, combating discrimination, community relations, the rights of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) and others.
OHCHR-Nepal provided technical assistance in developing and producing the pocketbook following a request from the Nepal Police. The first version of the Standing Order was published in 1996 in collaboration with OHCHR-Geneva.
“OHCHR welcomes this opportunity to provide the Nepal Police with specific information on enforcing the law and providing security to the population while fully respecting human rights norms,” said OHCHR-Nepal Representative Richard Bennett. “This pocketbook should help to ensure that the Police are performing their functions as an integral part of a new Nepal in which the State is meeting its human rights obligations.” nepalnews.com mk Jan 17 08
