Prachanda trying to stage ‘nationalist coup’: UML leader

At a time when Maoist leaders have been claiming that there is a real threat of ‘democratic coup’ in the country, a CPN-UML leader has said that Maoist chairman Prachanda himself is trying to stage a ‘nationalist coup’.

Former minister and standing committee member of the CPN-UML, Ishwor Pokharel.

Speaking at a programme in Lalitpur on Saturday, UML standing committee member Ishwor Pokharel said that Prachanda’s recent meeting with royal kingpins like Ramesh Nath Pandey and Niranjan Thapa hinted that the Maoists are preparing to stage a ‘nationalist coup’.

Pokharel’s comment came a day after a reported meeting between the Maoist chairman and the two key functionaries of the erstwhile royal regime. The Maoist leaders have confirmed the reports about the meeting, but haven't said anything as to what transpired between the two sides.

Pokharel, however, made it clear that the UML would continue to ally with the Maoists as long as they stopped violence and killings.

“The Maoists still haven't been able to shake off their inclination for violence. That's why they are talking about new revolt," said he. nepalnews.com mk Jan 19 08
