The government has refuted media reports that Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala was involved in printing counterfeit Indian currency notes during his political exile in India in the 1970s.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has in a statement Saturday said that they are “deeply saddened by such false news” and “refutes” the reports which claimed that the shocking admission was made by PM Koirala himself in an interview to Kantipur Television (KTV) in a prime-time slot.

“The office requests to one and all not to be misled by the false comments being circulated as claimed sourced from ‘Afno Itihas Afnai Britanta’, the autobiographical conversation of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, broadcast by Kantipur Television and published in the Nepal weekly magazine,” the government said in a statement.

The government has also requested all concerned not to be misled by such false matters. It has been learnt that a statement refuting the reports has already been mailed to the publication houses which carried the report including Kantipur Publication and the Indian Express.

PM still ill

Meanwhile, doctors say PM Koirala’s health condition is a cause of worry for them as it refuses to improve.

A team of doctors did a thorough checkup of the ailing 84-year-old leader Sunday morning at his Baluwatar residence and suggested that he take “adequate rest”.

According to a Baluwatar source, Koirala’s health had grown slightly worse from 3 am today morning following which the team of doctors were immediately called in.

PM Koirala was advised by his doctors to take full rest for a couple of days a day before he was to address the Seven Party Alliance (SPA) mass meeting at Tudhikhel last week.

PM Koirala has been getting bouts of mild fever from the past some time and has also shown preliminary signs of throat and chest infection. nepalnews.com ag Jan 20 08
