Six campuses to become autonomous
The government is set to give autonomy to six campuses currently running under the Tribhuwan University (TU).
As per the second higher education project being carried out with World Bank’s assistance, each of the six campuses will be given US$ 1 million and declared autonomous.
“The TU had approved a rule for providing autonomy to its affiliate campuses two years ago,” Professor Dr. Kamal Krishna Joshi, chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), told Nepal Samacharpatra.
“Currently, we have selected seven campuses for autonomy – Shankardev, Nepal Commerce Campus (Minbhawan), Padma Kanya, Patan Multiple, Saraswati, Prithvi Narayan Campus (Pokhara) and Birendra Multiple Campus (Chitwan). Of them, six will be declared autonomous,” Dr. Joshi said.
An autonomous campus can develop its own curriculum, appoint teachers and professors on its own and exercise a wide range of autonomy. Officials say this will inject quality in education.
The World Bank, in its first phase assistance in this sector, had provided $ 100,000 to each campus for administrative decentralisation. nepalnews.com sd Jan 27 08
