No end yet to CA stalemate

Constituent Assembly (CA) members from Terai-based parties disrupted the Assembly's proceedings today as well with three major parties scrambling to finalise the draft of the supplementary constitution amendment bill.

As in previous CA sittings, CA members from Terai parties came to the rostrum and started chanting slogans just as the session began.

Next sitting is scheduled to take place at 3:00 pm Thursday.

Meanwhile, leaders of the three major parties - CPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN (UML)- said even as they had reached an understanding on the Madhesi demands they were still working to iron out their differences over the diction of the draft bill being prepared by a three-member taskforce.

The Madhesi CA members have obstructed four consecutive CA sittings in a week, demanding constitutional guarantee of 'autonomous Madhes province' and 'group entry' of Madhesis into Nepal Army.

The government had agreed to meet these demands in the agreement it had signed few months earlier with the United Democratic Madhesi Front, an alliance of three Terai parties - Madhesi Janadhikar Forum, Terai Madhesh Loktantrik Party and Sadbhawana Party. nepalnews.com mk July 01 08
