Doctors go on nationwide strike; Shah's family demands probe

Doctors called a nationwide strike in hospitals on Thursday, demanding security to medical professionals, and action against those who attacked the Everest Nursing Home, Naya Baneshwor, following a death of a patient during treatment there.

All government and private hospitals remain closed today except emergency services. The agitating doctors complain that the government failed to listen to their grievances.

Despite the request from health ministry not to resort to serious protest over a minor incident, the doctors have continued with their strike.

The government has invited the agitators for negotiation.

Meanwhile, the family of Narayan Shah, a resident of Lalitpur, who died during treatment at Everest Nursing Home few days earlier, has demanded compensation and independent probe into Shah's death.

Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu on Thursday, Shah's wife Uma Shah said she wanted justice, demanding action against Dr Subodh Kumar Adhikari who was involved her husband's treatment.

Meanwhile, general secretary of Nepal Medical Association, Dr Kedar Narshingh K.C. said that action should be taken against the doctor if found guilty.

He, however, declared that doctors would continue agitation until the state guarantees their security. nepalnews.com ia/kp July 10 08
