Parties scramble to find a presidential candidate

Even as only two days remain for election of president and vice president, major parties are still scrambling to find a ‘suitable’ candidate.

The Maoists and Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) leaders have sat in a series of meetings but are still not in one mind over who should become the first president of the republic Nepal.

Maoist chairman Prachanda, on Wednesday, had told reporters that his party will reach an understanding with the UML on this issue by Thursday morning.

The leaders of Nepali Congress (NC), UML, Maoists as well as Madhesi parties are set to hold joint and separate meetings, Thursday.

Likewise, the Maoists and UML are holding their top level internal meetings to forge their strategies.

Meanwhile, as per the election schedule released by the Constituent Assembly (CA) secretariat, aspiring candidates (for president and vice president) need to file their nomination papers by 1 pm on Thursday.

The final list of the candidates will be published at 5 pm, Thursday.

The election will be held on Saturday. President and vice president will be elected by simple majority. nepalnews.com sd Jul 17 08
